Coles heralds a “more efficient” service with its new vans that have one standout feature.
Nicknamed ‘Sparky’, the EV van will fulfill up to 240 orders a week in Flagstone, south of Brisbane.
Coles estimates the van will save up to $170 in fuel each week, emit fewer emissions than its gas-powered cousins, and be quieter.
The retail giant also said the van doesn’t need to be “idling,” or running the engine when it’s not moving, to keep groceries at their optimum temperature.

Coles also wants to install electric refrigerators in 500 of his vans following a trial earlier this year.
The vans will travel along the east coast of Australia and will reduce emissions and operating costs.
James Geddes, general manager of online network growth, said Sparky would support the group’s ambition to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 75 percent by 2030.
“We are proud to introduce our first all-electric vehicle to our fleet of Coles Online vans,” he said.
“With about 40 deliveries to customers per day, the EV is a quieter, more efficient car that produces fewer emissions than a petrol car.”
Coles is also working with Linfox to trial an electric powered truck and with Toll Group and Nexport to trial an electric garden tractor in the supply chain.
