Footage of the fight from January 27 uploaded to TikTok shows the security guard confronting the suspected thief outside a Coles in Prahran, near Chapel Street in Melbourne.

The security guard was employed by MA Services Group and assigned to Coles Victoria.

He claims that after the incident he was fired for the way he handled the encounter, with a new guard now assigned to the store.

The entire incident is understood to have started when the alleged thief refused to show a receipt upon leaving the liquor section of the store.

From there the meeting spread to the street and the security guard made a citizen arrest.

Social media users were outraged by the guard’s removal and largely applauded his actions.

“All I see is a security guard really doing his job,” one person commented.

When contacted for comment, Coles said the incident was a police matter and declined to speak further about the incident.
