Australians have jumped to the defense of a Coles security guard who was reportedly fired for using excessive force against a robber.
Footage of the fight from January 27 uploaded to TikTok shows the security guard confronting the suspected thief outside a Coles in Prahran, near Chapel Street in Melbourne.
The guard is seen throwing punches and grabbing the man as bystanders hurl vile racial slurs at him.
Australians have jumped to the defense of a supermarket security guard who was reportedly fired for fighting with a shoplifter on January 27 at a Coles in Prahran, Victoria.
‘Hey! You can’t hit him,’ a passerby can be heard yelling at the guard.
Another yells, ‘You’re going to lose your fucking job.’
Others yell continuous racist comments too offensive to post.
The security guard was employed by MA Services Group and assigned to Coles Victoria.
He claims that after the incident he was fired for the way he handled the encounter, with a new guard now assigned to the store.
The entire incident is understood to have started when the alleged thief refused to show a receipt upon leaving the liquor section of the store.
From there the meeting spread to the street and the security guard made a citizen arrest.
The guard is seen throwing punches and grabbing the man as bystanders hurl vile racial slurs at him.
Social media users were outraged by the guard’s removal and largely applauded his actions.
“All I see is a security guard really doing his job,” one person commented.
I would love to be employed anywhere as a security guard wherever you go. The bad guys will soon learn to avoid that location. In fact, if ALL security acted like it, the bad guys would shrink,” wrote a second.
‘He should get a medal, not get fired, he needs more like him. LEGEND!’ said a third.
Social media users were outraged by the guard’s removal and largely applauded his actions. “All I see is a security guard actually doing his job,” one person commented.
However, others said he used ‘excessive force’ and ‘went too far’.
Excessive use of power may have cost you the job. I shouldn’t have gone that far,” wrote one user.
When contacted for comment, Coles said the incident was a police matter and declined to speak further about the incident.
