Hundreds of Australian consumers were left unable to pay their bills after an IT glitch left them charged twice for their grocery orders.

Many online shoppers at Coles across the country were charged twice for their orders on Monday.

An anonymous customer from South Australia said a $300 purchase cost her twice as much, leaving her unable to pay her car insurance.

The woman didn’t notice the double charge at first, but once she did, she called Contact the supermarket’s customer service immediately.

The operator told customers that the problem was affecting “hundreds” of customers on Monday.

The customer was also told that it would take at least several days for the money to be refunded, 7News reported.

The issue is said to be affecting customers across the country and a Coles spokesperson said the supermarket was working to refund orders ‘urgently’

A Coles spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the supermarket was “aware of a payment issue which resulted in some customers being charged twice”.

“Coles is proactively contacting all Coles Online customers who have been affected and we are working urgently to reverse the additional charges,” the spokesperson said.

“We understand the impact this issue may have and offer our sincere apologies to all of our customers who have been affected.”
