Coles customers have launched a new attack on the supermarket giant and its security gates, claiming they pose a major security risk.

The supermarket giant installed automated barriers at the exits of hundreds of stores in 2023 to prevent customers from stealing items.

The move did not go down well with some customers who complained that the gate would not let them out after they had finished paying for their groceries.

Concerns have now been raised about the safety risks posed by the safety measure, with fears it could endanger lives.

One customer took to TikTok to share her concerns, saying she feared they could pose a danger if a fire broke out.

'Doesn't this increase the fire risk?' she said.

“What if they fail in a fire?”

Others also raised similar concerns about the barriers in another TikTok video uploaded by a Coles shopper who filmed the gates where customers exited.

The video showed an elderly couple with their groceries in a cart waiting to be let out at the gate.

“That's where you are,” the woman said. “You have to wait (until) it opens.”

One user who commented on the post questioned whether the barriers would prevent shoppers from safely leaving the store in the event of an emergency.

“What if a fire breaks out and the evacuation is delayed,” he said.

“I thought I (would ask) the question because you're not supposed to block the principles.”

A Coles spokesperson said the gates (pictured) would open easily during an emergency

Others said the gates would be opened in an emergency.

“They would be designed to open when the fire alarm goes off,” one person wrote.

'The team can physically open them completely if there is a fire. The whole thing opens, not just the glass doors,” wrote another.

A Coles spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the gates are designed to open easily during emergencies.

Coles has introduced a range of security measures to protect staff, including body cameras for employees in selected stores, while the supermarket has also rolled out overhead cameras to monitor shoppers.
