Hauser described forming a friendship with a triple amputee.

“I walked in and I [said]”God, you look like a rat’s ass,” but it made him smile, you know?

“And then we started talking and it was just, you know, it broke the ice,” Hauser recalled.

Cole sits on the charity’s board of directors and has worked with Clay Hutmacher, the foundation’s chairman, to also establish grants for families who lose a non-military parent.

“When they calculate what they will do in the future, funding their children’s education is not part of that equation. We understand that,” Hutmacher told the outlet.

“I think it’s as good as a human being, just like the human element of wanting to help. Just to see someone go through that moment of grace,” he explained.
