Cody Simpson slammed with brutal back-handed compliments after AFL Grand Final national anthem performance: ‘Thought he was a swimmer?’

Champion swimmer and singer Cody Simpson has received some cheeky compliments following his performance at the AFL Grand Final on Saturday.

The Gold Coast-born crooner, 27, wowed the crowd at the MCG in Melbourne when he took to the stage to sing a heartfelt rendition of the Australian national anthem.

Cody cut a dashing figure in a custom black suit as he poured his heart and soul into the performance and had the audience in the palm of his hand.

Many AFL fans quickly took to social media to give a cheeky compliment to the former swimmer, who failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics earlier this year, joking that he is a much better singer than was an athlete.

“That swimmer just crushed the national anthem. Cody Simpson should go to a talent show or something,” one viewer joked.

“I thought Cody was a swimmer?” a second person added.

‘Swimmers are taking over the ‘G this year. Cody singing the national anthem,” a third user chimed in, and a fourth added, “Swimming’s loss is music’s gain.”

Cody rose to fame as a preteen in 2009 after uploading clips of his singing to YouTube, which helped launch his music career.

He later became a professional swimmer in 2019 and won a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

After failing to qualify for this year’s Olympics, Cody is once again focusing on his music career.

It comes after AFL fans praised Australian singer Christine Anu and her daughter Zipporah’s heartfelt rendition of Island Home at the AFL Grand Final.

Christine, 54, and her daughter Zipporah, 22, wowed 100,000 fans at the MCG when they performed a breathtaking rendition of the singer’s 1995 ode to life in Australia.

The Cairns-born singer and her daughter, who she shares with Australian actor Rodger Corser, oozed confidence and style as they belted out the hit to a stunned audience.

Stunned viewers quickly took to social media to praise the incredible feat – with many claiming Zipporah was even better than her famous mother.

Many also wondered why the talented duo weren’t the headline act instead of Katy Perry, as they criticized AFL bosses for not using a local lead artist.
