Cody Gakpo urges ‘special’ Mohamed Salah to stay at Liverpool beyond this season and insists the Reds are ‘very lucky to have him’ – with talisman’s contract expiring in the summer

Cody Gakpo has praised Liverpool teammate Mo Salah and insisted he hopes the Egyptian will stay at Anfield beyond the current season.

Despite starting their first season without Jurgen Klopp at the helm and enduring a quiet transfer window summer, the Reds have made a roaring start on all fronts.

Since Arne Slot took charge this summer, Liverpool have tasted defeat just once in all competitions.

Thanks to this impressive run, the club is at the top of both the Premier League and the new Champions League competition.

Once again, Salah has played a key role in their success, recently becoming the first ever Premier League player to score double figures in both goals and assists at Christmas.

Speaking about the 32-year-old Gakpo, he stressed that the club is ‘lucky’ to have a player of Salah’s abilities.

Gakpo added that he hopes Salah stays at the club amid speculation over his future

“It is very special what we are all witnessing,” Gakpo told the station club website.

‘The number of goals he scores, but also the assists he gives, the way he plays the game, how he puts other attacking players or midfielders like me in a position to score and be dangerous, is of a high level .

‘I hope for us and for him that he can continue to do that for a long time.

“We are very lucky to have him and proud to be his teammate and try to make him better. And he’s trying to make us better, too.”

Despite Liverpool’s flying start, there has been much speculation in recent months about the futures of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold at the club.

The trio have been integral to Liverpool’s success in recent years but could all leave on a free transfer at the end of the season as their contracts expire.

Salah previously expressed his disappointment that he had not been offered a new contract, but has indicated he is keen to continue his career with the Reds.

When asked last month whether the uncertainty surrounding his future could distract Salah, Slot emphasized that based on the evidence, the opposite could be true.

“I don’t think it distracts Mo at all,” said the Dutch boss.

“It might even bring out the best in him when you look at his performance so far.”
