Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones couldn’t help but chuckle when they saw Jordan Pickford’s erratic goalkeeping on a corner against Liverpool in a 2018 match.
The two Liverpool stars were asked to rank the club’s best cup goals in recent years ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Fulham.
A clip from January 2018 showing Virgil van Dijk beating Pickford with the ball and scoring on his debut in the FA Cup third round against Everton somewhat entertained them.
Van Dijk rose above the crowd to head in the winner after 84 minutes, while Pickford was left in no man’s land after bursting off his line in an attempt to claim the cross.
‘What’s the goalkeeper doing, mate?’ Gakpo asked, chuckling.

Pickford came off his line but Virgil van Dijk beat him to the ball and headed in the Merseyside derby winner to knock Everton out of the FA Cup.
‘What’s he doing? What’s he doing?’ Jones asked in disbelief, growing amused.
Van Dijk’s late goal in front of the Kop separated the sides as Liverpool won the 230th Merseyside derby 2-1.
James Milner had given Jurgen Klopp’s side the lead before Gylfi Sigurdsson equalized for the visitors.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the corner but Pickford looked doubtful about whether to come on and was too slow as Van Dijk towered over the crowd and headed into the empty net.
Jones only wanted to rate the goal as average because of Van Dijk’s physical prowess.
“Look how big he is,” he said. ‘For me I would consider it average because with his size you would expect him to win headers in that. But because it’s Everton and it’s his first game…’
“I think it’s a good goal, mate,” Gakpo concluded.

Van Dijk had scored a good goal, but Jones and Gakpo both asked: ‘What is the goalkeeper doing?’
Both Gakpo and Jones were present in Liverpool’s last cup match, as Liverpool booked a Carabao Cup final at Wembley against Chelsea after beating Fulham 3–2.
Liverpool drew 1-1 at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening. Luis Diaz had opened the scoring after eleven minutes, but Issa Diop equalized for the home side after 76 minutes and set up a nerve-wracking finish.
