Coco Gauff parts company with coach Brad Gilbert after frustrating US Open

World No. 6 Coco Gauff and coach Brad Gilbert are parting ways after the player was defeated in the fourth round of the US Open in frustrating fashion, Gilbert said on Wednesday, adding that he is looking forward to the next chapter in his career.

Gilbert helped Gauff to her first Grand Slam title in New York last year, but the player was unable to retain her title after disappointing early exits at the US Open tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.

“Thank you to @CocoGauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort,” said Gilbert, who reached No. 4 in the world rankings in a 13-year playing career. said on X.

“Coco, at just 20 years old, your future looks incredibly bright and I wish you nothing but continued success. I look forward to the next chapter in my coaching career.”

Gauff thanked her former coach later on Wednesday in a social media post.

“We’ve had an incredible run and I wish you all the very best for the future!” she said. wrote on X.

Gauff followed up her big breakthrough at Flushing Meadows with semi-final finishes at the Australian Open and French Open this year.

But there were clear signs of friction between her and compatriot Gilbert at Wimbledon, where she shouted at him in frustration during her fourth-round defeat to American Emma Navarro.
