Climate activists were arrested by police on Monday after occupying the street in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’ home in Brentwood, California.
A group of about 40 activists from the Sunrise Movement raised slogans criticizing Harris and demanding that the Biden administration declare a climate emergency to take more draconian measures to stop climate change.
“We occupy the street outside VP Harris’ home to demand that she join us in calling on Biden to declare a climate emergency,” the group wrote on social media, sharing a video of their activists chanting slogans.

“Fund climate action, not genocide,” read one sign, indicating they were unhappy with the Biden administration’s financial support for Israel’s war in Gaza.
The group spent the night on the street next to Harris’ house in protest. They seemed disillusioned by Harris’ lack of action on this issue, recalling positions she supported when she ran for president in 2020, such as the Green New Deal.
Harris’ column was forced to do so take an alternative route from her home to the Los Angeles airport on Monday, as she had planned a campaign trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Harris, Harris, can’t you see this is an emergency,” the protesters chanted, insisting that “fossil fuels are killing me.”
Six of the activists were arrested by police.
One of the arrested activists criticized Biden and Harris for continuing to allow record fossil fuel production.
“I’m on the front lines raising my voice for my Black and Latinx families and friends because I know we deserve to have affordable housing and health care, we deserve a government that will fight for us, but instead of a climate emergency declare, Biden and Harris see oil and gas production expanding to record levels,” said Ariela Lara, 18 according to to a release.
A surety fund was established GoFundMe to help bail activists out of jail, but at time of publication only $90 of their $5,000 goal had been reached.
