A teenage boy is in critical condition after a freak accident during an after-school track and field practice.

The 13-year-old was hit on the head during a hammer throw training at St Albans Reserve in Clearview in Adelaide’s north around 5pm on Thursday.

Emergency services treated the boy for a serious head injury before he was rushed to Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where he is now fighting for his life.

Apparently the boy came from Christian Brothers College.

Police were on the scene for several hours on Thursday evening, where they were seen speaking with another student at the school.

Several Christian Brothers College employees were present at the time but declined to comment on the incident. The advertiser reported.

Enfield Harriers Athletic Club is based on the reserve, which is a hammer pendulum circle.

Apparently the club has drawn up a list of safety rules for the hammer throw circle.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to the school for comment.
