After a day of disappointment for quarterback Russell Wilson, his wife, Ciara, was by his side after he was cut from the Denver Broncos.
Wilson posted a statement on his Instagram account thanking his teammates and the fans for his time in the Mile High City.
Underneath that post, Ciara said, “One of One! My greatest inspiration! I love you #3 #Grateful.”
Wilson saw his five-year, $242.6 million contract with the Broncos end when the organization informed him they would officially cut him once the 2024 NFL season officially starts in a few weeks.
As a result, the Broncos will take an $85 million dead cap hit – the largest in NFL history.
Russell Wilson learned Monday that he is being cut from the Denver Broncos
In the statement, Wilson thanked his teammates and Broncos staff for his two years in Denver
Wilson’s wife, Ciara, commented under that post, supporting her husband during this time
That includes $37 million the organization will have to eat this season.
“Over the past two years, you have welcomed my family and me with open arms and embraced us as members of the Denver community,” Wilson’s statement said. ‘This city will always have a special place in my heart.
“Our family grew here, we built countless memories and friendships and formed relationships that will last a lifetime.”
Wilson then thanked his teammates – both as a group and individually – as well as members of the Broncos staff and others around him.
The statement concluded: “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. God has me. I’m excited about what’s next.”
It ends the Wilson saga in Denver, punctuated by what can now be considered one of the worst trades in NFL history.
Denver sent QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant, DL Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Wilson and a fourth-round pick in March 2022 .
Wilson and Ciara have been together since 2015 and married in 2016
Wilson had a poor first season under head coach Nathaniel Hackett. This season with new boss Sean Payton hasn’t been much better.
Denver never reached the playoffs under Wilson: 5-12 in the first year and 8-9 in 2023.
He finished his Broncos career with 6,594 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in 30 games of action – where he amassed an 11-19 record.
Wilson and Ciara have been together since 2015 and married in 2016. They have three children together and also have a stepson who she had in a previous relationship with rapper Future.
