Christopher Nolan’s next movie is revealed as filmmaker takes on ‘mythic action epic’ with star-studded cast
Sir Christopher Nolan’s next film will be The Odyssey, it has been announced.
The filmmaker, 54, was reportedly working on a mystery project with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o for a 2026 release.
Now Universal has confirmed that it is adapting Homer’s epic poem, which follows Odysseus’ journey home after the Trojan War.
The studio said in a statement: ‘Christopher Nolan’s next film’ Odyssey is a mythical action epic shot around the world using brand new IMAX film technology.
“The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX movie screens for the first time, opening in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
The poem has been adapted several times over the years, most notably with Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas and released in 1954, while also inspiring ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ from 2000.

Anne recently admitted that it is ‘filling [her] with such joy’ to work with Nolan on his next film, having previously starred in his 2012 film ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and 2014’s ‘Interstellar’.
She told Women’s Wear Daily: ‘I have so many feelings about it that I don’t even know how to put them into words.
It fills me with so much joy… I love Chris and Emma Nolan so much, and being invited into their world [is] one of the best places you can find yourself.
“Being invited twice really felt like something, three felt like it would have been greedy, so I never let myself hope that that would happen, and it makes me emotional, to be completely honest. It makes me feel like I’m doing something right.’
And Spider-Man star Tom recently admitted he’s ‘honoured’ to be working with Nolan on his next project, saying it was the ‘phone call of a lifetime’ when he got the chance to take part in the upcoming movie. .
Speaking on Good Morning America, he said: ‘All I can say is I’m incredibly excited.
“And of course honored, but that’s all I can say because honestly that’s all I know.”
When asked if Nolan was the type of director who would say yes to “seeing unseen,” Holland replied, “100 percent, without a doubt.”

Robert Pattinson will also reportedly appear in the upcoming film
The 28-year-old star admitted that a phone call about the project reminded him that he had signed on to star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who he has portrayed in six films.
He said: “When the opportunity arose it was the call of a lifetime.
“It was reminiscent of the phone call about ‘Spider-Man’ ten years ago. It’s an amazing thing to me. I’m super proud and I’m really excited.”
The Odyssey is one of two poems attributed to Homer and is considered one of the most important works of the Western canon.
It was composed around the 8th or 7th century BC and is still widely read to this day.
