Christopher Nolan has decided to get a little more literal with his next epic, reaching back into the past and adapting Homer’s story. The Odysseyaccording to a new post on X by Universal Pictures.
The revelation came after fans speculated for months about the filmmaker’s sequel Oppenheimerwhich won Nolan his first Oscar for Best Director, along with the award for Best Picture and five more awards. Despite guesses that ranged from “helicopter movie” Unpleasant “period vampire thriller”, nothing even came close to the truth of Nolan taking over one of the most famous stories in human history.
But while Nolan’s choice of adaptation may be ambitious, he’s certainly already assembled a cast that lives up to the hype. While we don’t know what roles anyone will actually play, we do know that Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron are on board, and there’s still plenty of time for more stars to join in to do with production.
The original story of the Odyssey follows the mythical hero Odysseus on his arduous, chaotic ten-year journey back from the Trojan War. Along the way he encounters all kinds of strange and dangerous creatures, only to return home and be greeted by countless suitors vying for his wife’s hand in marriage. Of course, regular Nolan aficionados can probably already find parts of the story to speculate about when it comes to how his non-linear style will be felt.
According to Universal’s tweet, we can (unsurprisingly) expect the film to be shot on state-of-the-art IMAX cameras – perhaps a Nolan staple at this point – and shot “around the world,” in case you somehow thought Nolan would go. to give up his status as a proponent for location shooting for his largest, oldest epic yet.
The Odyssey is scheduled for release on July 17, 2026.
