Christmas Day weather in YOUR city: Most of Australia will bask in sunshine on December 25, but some will get drenched – here’s the forecast near you

While much of south east Australia will be eating prawns and pudding under clear sunny skies on Christmas Day, those living in the north of the country may need to bring the festivities indoors at the latest weather forecast.

After an uneven start to summer, warmer temperatures will allow most Christmas revelers across the country to feel stress-free about taking their celebrations outdoors.

In Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, warm and sunny conditions will prevail as children open packages from Santa Claus, while Sydney, Canberra and Hobart can expect cloudy but clear conditions.

Those in Brisbane and Darwin can expect some showers with high humidity, as expected at this time of year.

The Victorian capital is expected to hit a sunny 28°C on Christmas Day, but elsewhere in the state it will be sweltering, with Mildura forecast to be 37°C and Albury-Wodonga at 35°C.

Hot weather in Victoria, including Melbourne, will make for a warm Boxing Day test match, with a cooler turnaround expected mid-next week.

Conditions are expected to be good and favorable for the start of the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race, although a shift to the south is expected to hit the fleet around Wednesday and Thursday.

That pattern is expected to continue through the Boxing Day test match until a cool change in status arrives on Wednesday of next week.

Sydney will hit a high of 28C on Christmas Day with mostly cloudy conditions and a chance of a thunderstorm in the west of the city. Elsewhere in New South Wales, highs will be in the 20s with mostly clear skies on the north coast, temperatures around 30°C on the south coast and highs in the mid-30s in the west in Dubbo and Broken Hill.

Conditions are expected to be good and favorable for the start of the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race, although the fleet is expected to shift south around Wednesday and Thursday.

Cloud will begin to clear over Canberra with a high of 31C.

Adelaide will be a warm and clear 31°C on Christmas Day, but will rise to 37°C and 41°C over the next two days as a mini heatwave sets in. A fresh change is expected to come to the state before the New Year.

Populous south-east Queensland will see a “mixed bag” of festive season weather, with showers possible on Christmas Day. Brisbane will be humid and 29C on Christmas and Boxing days, while the Gold Coast will hit 29C and far north Queensland the low 30s.

Much of Australia will see clear skies and temperatures approaching 30C on Christmas Day, with warmer conditions forecast for the coming week across the south-east of the country.

Bringing the Christmas festivities outdoors should be stress-free, as much of the country will be rain-free on December 25.

Those in the northern parts of the country, including Brisbane and Darwin, can expect some showers and storms over the Christmas period.

Perth, which had a sweltering Christmas last year, can expect another warm 31C day, albeit significantly colder than the 41C it had in 2021.

Cooler temperatures in the mid-20s will prevail in popular south coast vacation spots on Christmas Day and the days immediately following, while the northern region as far as Broome can expect temperatures in the mid-30s.

The Northern Territory will be the wettest part of Australia over Christmas, with showers and thunderstorms on most days as the fallout from Tropical Cyclone Ellie continues to be felt.

Darwin will be 32C on Christmas Day and up to 20mm of rain is expected.

Tasmania, unsurprisingly, will be the coolest part of Australia on Christmas Day with a mild 25C forecast for Hobart and similar temperatures across the rest of the apple island.
