Christina Applegate admits she is grappling with ‘real, f**k it all’ depression as she copes with multiple sclerosis battle

Christina Applegate candidly described the mental anguish she had felt during her battle with multiple sclerosis, admitting that she had been in a ‘real’ depression while dealing with her chronic condition.

On the podcast she shares with friend Jamie Lynn-Sigler: MessyChristina admitted that she has been in a “real, f**k it all” depression that is starting to scare her.

The episode – which was recorded in early 2024 – also saw Christina, 52, reflect on her appearance at the Emmys, which she described as the most challenging day of her life.

‘This is very honest… I don’t enjoy life. I don’t enjoy it. I don’t enjoy things anymore,” she admitted.

“If someone can lie in bed with me and talk, like you did and like a friend of mine recently did… that’s nice. I enjoy that,” Christina added. ‘But when someone says, ‘let’s get up and go for a walk’ or ‘let’s go for coffee,’ I think, I don’t enjoy that process.’

Jamie, 43, who also suffers from multiple sclerosis, advised her friend not to compare her current condition with her past: ‘It’s so hard to live in a disabled body. It is so hard. “I will not take that away from you and I am with you,” she said.

“But what makes it harder is when you compare it to what it used to be. I mean, I still do it all the time, but in the moments where I’m just a little bit more accepting, it takes away a little bit of the suffering,” she continued.

“Once we get you to this place where we accept that this is how it will be, maybe forever… for me it’s not a reason enough for you to stop living because I’m sitting here in front of you and you still makes… I laugh like no one else can.

“You still make me laugh. You still make me feel loved.

“I can’t let you give up. I can not do it. I want you to do it for me,” she added. “I hope this podcast also shows you even more of your worth and shows you how incredibly strong you are and how much you deserve to give yourself a chance,” said Sigler.

Christina went on to describe the state of her mental health, revealing: ‘I’m currently in the throes of depression, which I don’t think I’ve felt in years. Like real, fuck it all depression.

‘Like a real depression, where I’m also a bit afraid of it, because it feels very fatalistic. It really feels like “end of”, you know you don’t say that, I don’t mean that, I just mean like I’m trapped in this darkness now I haven’t felt like this in I don’t even know how long, probably like this’ n twenty years.’

She also called her Emmy Awards performance “the hardest day of my life” and admitted that she slept for “two days” after the event.

But Christina is looking for support: she contacted a therapist whom she wanted to visit soon.

However, she had long avoided therapy in an attempt to face the emotions: “I have avoided therapy since I was diagnosed because I am so afraid of crying and not being able to stop crying . ‘

“I’m just so scared that the floodgates will open and I won’t be able to stop,” she added.

But Jamie urged her to really feel her emotions: “I feel like you owe it to yourself to cry and really, really go there… You have to allow yourself to feel things like that.” You can’t keep pushing it away or you will be where you are now. You feel like you’re in purgatory, you know?’

Christina was diagnosed with MS in 2021, while Jamie received her diagnosis at the age of 20.
