Christian McCaffrey’s status for Week 2 revealed – as he continues to battle calf injury and Achilles tendonitis

Christian McCaffrey has been ruled out for Week 2 of the NFL season and the San Francisco 49ers are considering placing him on the injured list, it has been reported.

The NFL star missed the team’s Week 1 win over the Jets and was questionable for Week 2 as he continues to deal with a calf injury and Achilles tendonitis.

His status has now finally been confirmed after head coach Kyle Shanahan announced he will not participate in Sunday’s trip to Minnesota.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has since reported that the 49ers are considering placing McCaffrey on the injured list, which would mean he’ll be out for this week and the next three games.

The news is a huge blow to one of the Super Bowl favorites, which could be without its star player until at least mid-October.

The Niners are in Minnesota on Sunday for an NFC game against the Vikings before playing the Rams, Patriots and Cardinals.

If McCaffrey is placed on IR, his first game will be Oct. 10 in Seattle.

Shanahan announced Friday night that Thursday was McCaffrey’s “worst day yet” as he continues to battle an injury.

The decision to leave McCaffrey out of Monday night’s 32-19 Week 1 win over the New York Jets came as a surprise to many and was a disappointment to many fantasy football players who had selected the star player with one of the top picks in their draft.

McCaffrey was listed as questionable on the injury report but said Friday he expected to play. Further confusing the matter was a post-match televised interview by substitute Jordan Mason, who said he had been told Friday he would start.

Shanahan said the decision wasn’t made until Monday and that he only told Mason to prepare for a potentially more demanding workout now that McCaffrey is dealing with the injury.

It appears that Mason will see the ball more often in the coming weeks after impressing against the Jets and proving himself to be a worthy replacement at the running back position.

McCaffrey was injured early in training camp and missed four weeks of practice before returning to the field last week, but has continued to practice occasionally since then.
