Christian Atsu was found alive and is recovering in hospital after being pulled from the rubble following two devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria, according to reports in Portugal.

More than 3,000 people have died and thousands more have been injured after the catastrophic earthquake that struck the two countries overnight, leveling neighborhoods while families slept.

A search and rescue operation has been launched for the former Chelsea and Newcastle man, and has been widely reported to have been successful.

The earthquake hit hard in Kahramanmaras, where Hatayspor is based.

Atsu also played for Chelsea, although he spent most of his time with the club on loan.

A search and rescue mission is underway to find the people who are trapped under the rubble.

Hatayspor player Onur Ergun posted an Instagram story in response to earlier reports that he was missing to say were incorrect.
