Fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie got a closer look on Tuesday when the film’s second full trailer was released.
The clip gave a fuller look at Chris Pratt’s voice performance as the iconic plumber and adventurer Mario, along with more time spent on his brother Luigi (voiced by It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Charlie Day) and Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy) .
Initial social media reactions to the new trailer were decidedly mixed, as fans complimented the impressively detailed computer-animated visuals, while continuing to opine that Pratt was the “weakest link” among the all-star cast, who had previously been criticized for a lack of of diversity.
Mixed bag: Fans were in for a treat on Tuesday when the second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released, although many were still left cold by Chris Pratt’s voice performance as Mario
The trailer opens in the middle of the action, as Mario emerges from the shadows to walk into an arena, where he walks across the center of a thin platform suspended in mid-air.
The cartoonish gladiator leaps into the air for a powerful blow against Donkey Kong (voiced by Seth Rogen), but his hopes for a triumphant victory are comically dashed when the gorilla knocks him down and begins to pulverize him.
The intro gives a nice taste of the quality of the animation with a close-up of Mario’s hilariously pained expressions as he is pummeled by Donkey Kong.
Meanwhile, Peach and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) try to avert their eyes at the sight of their champion losing so dramatically.

It becomes clear that Mario is on a quest at Peach’s behest when Bowser (Jack Black) makes a sinister appearance.
The evil spiky-shelled turtle terrorizes Luigi, who appears to be separated from Mario, trapping him in its clutches.
“I’m not sure you know who I am, but I’m about to rule the world,” Bowser says in introduction.
“But there’s one problem,” he continues as Mario bounces on mushrooms somewhere far away while chasing Toad.
