Chris Paul broke his left hand against the Pistons on Friday night and will require surgery, the Warriors said after the game.

Golden State defeated Detroit 113-109 to improve to 17-18, but it wasn't all positive as Paul was injured in the second half.

The point guard missed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 6:08 left in the third quarter and tried to force the long rebound when he connected with Detroit's Jaden Ivey.

Paul grabbed his hand before heading to the locker room.

The 38-year-old will undergo surgery next week but is expected to return this season.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the team will have to “hold down the fort” without the veteran

'That's tough, I feel so sorry for Chris. I know he had a couple of hand surgeries before I believe, maybe on the other side,” coach Steve Kerr said.

'I saw him holding it and was immediately concerned. I got the floor just after I walked off the floor. So I feel terrible for Chris and obviously guys are going to step up and be ready to play. We have to hold down the fort without him.”

Paul, who was traded to the Warriors from the Wizards in July after they acquired him from the Suns, averaged 9.0 points, 7.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds during Friday's game.

He has spent much of the season in a reserve role for Golden State.

The Warriors, the 2021-2022 champions, have struggled to back up Stephen Curry's play and currently sit just tenth in the Western Conference.
