Chris Evans reveals the real reason he walked away from Captain America and why he might be turning his back on Hollywood for good

Chris Evans has spoken out about why he left his multi-million dollar contract as Marvel’s Captain America.

The actor, 42, gained huge recognition and became one of the highest-paid movie stars in Hollywood before stepping down after Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Now in an interview with GQ magazine for their October issue, Chris reflects on his decision to hang up his superhero mask and why he may be turning his back on the industry for good.

The actor says, “I was initially very scared to take up the role. I remember in my late twenties there was a real change in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more fear, a little more insecurity.

“At the end of the day you always wonder, ‘Should I do this?’

Chris says that as his fame grew, so did his fear, which at times became paralyzing.

He eventually moved out of Los Angeles and back to his hometown just outside Boston, Massachusetts.

He says, “I just wasn’t sure if I was getting closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept telling me that I was getting further and further away, that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.

On the anxiety of returning to where he grew up, Chris adds: ‘(It) takes me back to a place where life was not only simpler – that’s too restrictive – but to a time when I was more pure, I think I; where my ego and my insecurities weren’t such a dominant force that I had to go against.’

Chris almost quit acting due to severe anxiety, which was exacerbated by the sheer size of the iconic blockbuster franchise.

When asked if he would ever return to the Marvel Universe, Chris says, “I’ll never say never, just because it was such an amazing experience. But I also hold it very dearly. It’s something I’m very proud of.

“And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab, if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it felt like it had nothing to do with the original thing.”

Second wedding! It’s been a time of exciting changes for Chris, who tied the knot this weekend with actress Alba Baptista, 26

The worldwide fame has had an impact on Chris, who admits he has doubts about whether he wants to continue acting.

He says, “I just couldn’t make furniture for anyone and be happy. I don’t want to waste too much time in this industry, but that doesn’t feel real… That doesn’t sound right. I don’t want to take up too much space in an industry I’ve spent twenty years in.

‘Sometimes I wonder if I’m missing something. I think I’m a very driven person. I have a lot of energy. I wake up early, I get a lot done in a day, but it’s not always focused on acting. Sometimes reading a script is the last thing I want to do.”

It’s been a time of exciting changes for Chris, who tied the knot with actress Alba Baptista, 26, this weekend.

A source revealed that the couple’s wedding was under “strict lockdown” and attendees were asked to “sign non-disclosure agreements and phones were forfeited,” according to Page six.

The insider also revealed that the happy couple’s star-studded guest list included his Marvel co-stars such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner.

Additionally, John Krasinski, his wife Emily Blunt, Elsa Pataky and Susan Downey were seen “in nearby Boston for the wedding,” according to People.

The couple is reportedly planning to say ‘I do’ again.

The Captain America star and the actress will celebrate a second wedding anniversary in Baptista’s native Portugal Page six.

The event will see some family members, who could not attend the American wedding on Saturday, celebrate the occasion with the newlyweds.

“There will be a second meeting in Portugal for members of Alba’s family who couldn’t be in Massachusetts,” a source told the publication.

‘Sometime this week, I believe. Then they leave Portugal for their honeymoon.’

In January, Evans officially confirmed his relationship with Alba in an adorable video where he and his love tried to scare each other.

In the caption, he said he’s looking back on 2022, adding three red heart emojis that made it clear he had love for the budding star.

The October issue of British GQ is available via digital download and on newsstands on September 26.
