Chris Eubank Jr’s trainer Brian McIntyre given suspended prison sentence for gun possession
Chris Eubank Junior’s coach, Brian McIntyre, was given a 20-month suspended prison sentence for weapons possession.
McIntyre was arrested at Manchester Airport last month after security officers allegedly found a gun in a suitcase as he checked in to fly to Atlanta following Eubank Jr’s victory over Liam Smith in their September 3 rematch.
British Border Force intercepted the luggage after a scan reportedly showed a weapon, along with a magazine and ammunition inside it.
The trainer, who also works with undisputed welterweight world champion Terence Crawford, had a license to carry the weapon in the United States and at no time did he know it was in his luggage until until it is detected at the airport.
After hearing about McIntyre’s work in the Omaha community and hearing from a number of character witnesses, including Crawford, Judge Nicholas Dean KC, honorary recorder of Manchester, imposed a sentence of 20 months in prison, with two-year reprieve.
McIntyre admitted to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Judge Dean said McIntyre was a “completely good man” and said the “exceptional circumstances” of the case merited a departure from the usual minimum sentence of five years in prison.
He said: “This is clearly and obviously a case where the sentence should be suspended.”
