More than ten children at a day care center developed a rash and swelling after taking an ‘unknown substance’ during lunch.
Paramedics rushed to treat several young children from the Milestones Early Learning in Keperra in north Brisbane on Thursday afternoon.
The children suffered from various reactions, including ‘redness in the face and body’.
“All children at the center have been exposed to an unknown substance during their lunch,” Queensland Ambulance wrote in a letter to concerned parents.

More than ten children at a Brisbane nursery have ingested an ‘unknown substance’ that caused swelling and a rash, prompting them to be rushed to hospital
“These include redness of the face and body, swelling of the lips and face, agitation/irritation.”
The letter said the chance of a delayed onset of symptoms was rare and urged parents not to panic.
Queensland Ambulance suggested that parents can check their child in with their GP if they have any concerns.
It recommended that anyone with concerns about their child’s breathing or airways take them to a hospital or call triple-0 immediately.
The center sent texts to parents just before 2 p.m. asking them to pick up their children after children developed an “unknown rash.”
“Medical advice is strictly followed,” the text read.
A spokeswoman for QAS said none of the children were taken to hospital by ambulance.
The children are stable.
A man who declined to be named said his child hadn’t had lunch, adding that he’s been at the center for more than a year — with no problems.
A spokesperson for Keperra, a spokesperson for Milestones Early Learning, said all safety policies and medical advice had been “strictly” followed during the scare.
She added that the cause of the rash is being investigated.
They said the Queensland Ambulance Service and families told them most of the symptoms cleared up after a short time.
The spokesperson urged parents and families to watch their children and follow current medical advice.
The center is committed to maintaining the safety of all children in its care, she added.
