Young child is killed after caravan burst into flames at popular tourist hotspot in Boort, Victoria

A young child has died after a caravan caught fire in a tourist lake town in Victoria.

Emergency services were called to the fire on Lake View Street, Boort, at 5.50pm on Thursday.

The fire brigade managed to extinguish the fire, but found the dead child in the caravan.

Victoria Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

“The Arson and Explosives Squad has been notified and an arson chemist will attend the scene to determine the cause of the fire,” a spokesperson said.

“Officers are aware of the impact such a tragic incident has on family members, community members and first responders and will ensure welfare services are in place.”

Located next to Lake Boort in the Shire of Loddon, Boort is a tourist hotspot northwest of Melbourne.

Things get busy in the summer months as travelers flock to the area’s lakes.

It is not yet clear whether the child was from the area or was a visitor.
