A child has been killed and 10 people injured in a horrific car crash in the Northern Territory.
On Sunday morning, just before 11am, a Toyota Prado carrying 11 people crashed on the Mardiyardu Road, located between the northern towns of Kalkarindji and Lajamanu.
The car was driven back to Kalkarindji, where a CareFlight team was on hand to provide assistance, Northern Territory police said.
The eight-year-old child was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
A 29-year-old woman was reportedly driving the car when it crashed. She and ten other people were injured, but their lives were not in danger.
According to Detective Richard Musgrave, alcohol is likely to have been a factor in the accident.
“Communication from the crash site was limited due to the remote location of the crash. Investigators are currently on scene at both locations,” he said Monday.
“This is a complex accident involving alcohol and a large number of passengers who were not restrained. It has unfortunately resulted in the death of a young child.”
‘Local police are providing support to the affected families and communities.’
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and are calling on anyone with information to contact them.
