Chicago White Sox avoid record 22-game losing streak with win over A’s

Rookie Jonathan Cannon made his second career win a memorable one Tuesday night, helping the Chicago White Sox snap a record-breaking 21-game losing streak by pitching six strong innings to a 5-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Andrew Benintendi hit a home run to put Chicago on the board and scored the game’s final run on a ninth-inning double to give the White Sox their first win since July 10 against the Minnesota Twins.

With the win, Chicago is now tied with the 1988 Baltimore Orioles for the longest losing streak in American League history. They are two losses shy of the current record set by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies.

Cannon (2-5) did most of the heavy lifting, limiting the A’s to one run and six hits in his six innings. He walked two and struck out five.

The 24-year-old was rewarded with his first victory since June 18. In his last seven games, six of which as a starter, he had not recorded a single victory.

Benintendi gave the White Sox a lead they never relinquished with his two-run homer off A’s starter Ross Stripling (2-11) in the fourth. The two-out homer, his 10th homer of the season, also scored Luis Robert Jr., who had singled.

The A’s cut their deficit in half when Zack Gelof hit his 14th home run in the final inning.

But that was the last time the home team scored against Cannon, Dominic Leone, Chad Kuhl and John Brebbia. The relievers combined to throw three perfect innings, with three outs each.

The White Sox went on a run-away run in the sixth inning when Andrew Vaughn batted in a run and two batters later Brooks Baldwin scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

Lenyn Sosa made it the deciding score in the ninth inning when he singled to score Benintendi. Benintendi had a double, a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.

Baldwin also had two hits for the White Sox, ending a 13-game losing streak on foreign soil that stretched back to July 5 in Miami.

Gelof, Miguel Andujar and Brent Rooker each had two hits for the A’s, who lost for the third time in their last four games.

Stripling was pulled after 5 1/3 innings, charged with four runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out two.
