The Chicago Sky have fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon less than a year after hiring her as head of the Windy City’s WNBA franchise.
The Sky’s biggest star, Angel Reese, posted on social media that she was “heartbroken” over the news of Weatherspoon’s firing.
After being hired in October 2023, Weatherspoon led Chicago to a 13-27 record, one spot shy of the WNBA playoffs.
‘I’m devastated. I am literally at a loss for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life,” Reese said. “She was the only person who believed in me. The one who trusted me.”
“Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black woman in sports when no one believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances we’ve been through this year and when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU.”

“You were an unsung hero in my life. In a short time we have built a relationship that will last forever. I will never question God as to why He brings people into my life and takes them from me in the capacity that I need them, but I have always believed that everyone is in your life for a reason and a time.”
“You were the best reason and season. You didn’t deserve this, but I can’t thank you enough. I love your teaspoon.”
The Sky missed the postseason for the first time since 2018, the final year of Amber Stocks’ tenure.
An early pioneer of the WNBA, Weatherspoon played for the New York Liberty from 1997-2003 and one season for the Los Angeles Sparks.
Who the Sky will turn to is unclear, especially with a young core that seemed to rally around Weatherspoon in her first season.
