A Chicago serial criminal who is known for eating jails has returned to prison for stealing a Google engineer’s Maserati while the victim was doing yoga.

Lamont Cathey, 25, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery, aiding or abetting possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and two counts of identity theft.

During one of his crimes, Cathey, who has 13 felonies, stole a Google engineer’s expensive luxury car from a yoga studio parking lot after breaking into the man’s locker and stealing his keys in 2021.

When the engineer returned to his locker after his training, he noticed that his keys, wallet and phone were missing and that his car was no longer in the parking lot. Surveillance footage captured Cathey leaving in the Maserati, where she headed to a Target store to spend $2,399 on two iPads using the victim’s credit cards.

Cathey made a name for herself in the Cook County Jail for swallowing metal objects, including nails and screws, racking up $2 million in medical bills.

A few days later, he broke into another locker at a different yoga studio and stole $100 from a different man, as well as a phone and credit cards. She used the man’s cards to buy $2,400 worth of items at Best Buy and $1,100 at Target, according to C.W.B. Chicago.

Cathey did not appear at her bond hearing because she was at the hospital for treatment for “foreign body ingestion,” the outlet reported.

During his many stints behind bars, Cathey has reportedly cost taxpayers at least $2 million in medical bills by literally eating up pieces of the facility.

By 2016, the career criminal had more than 20 surgeries involving the ingestion of metals, including screws and nails.

Cathey began swallowing metal objects after a plea deal that was supposed to allow him to attend boot camp fell through in 2014. He has eaten a thumbtack, leather straps, and even parts of a medical device he had dismantled while in jail. jail.

“It’s literally eating up the jail,” then-Cook County Jail CEO Cara Smith said at the time. It has been a terribly sad and very frustrating case.

Prior to his incarceration, Cathey had been enrolled in an alternative charter high school, where Cathey was called the 6-foot-8 “Big Boy” by the basketball coaches and had shown signs of depression.

His lawyers and his mother said at the time that he is in urgent need of psychiatric treatment.

Cathey had been in trouble as a teenager. He was arrested more than a dozen times when he was a minor, though none of those arrests led to convictions.

Cathey will be eligible for parole on May 14, 2024.
