A Chicago politician and a community group desperate to curb the city’s growing crime problem beg 12 hours a day where people don’t fire their guns.
Alder Maria Hadden, a Democrat, supported a proposal by the group Native Sons calling for ‘The People’s Ordinance’ – a ceasefire between 9am and 9pm.
‘PROTECT THE YOUTH NO SLIDING WILE THE SUN IS OUT’ reads the all-caps promo, titled United For A Safe Summer.
They are asking that gunfire be waived to reduce risk for Chicago residents who are “not involved in high-risk activities.”
“We have to start somewhere,” said Tatiana Atkins, co-founder of Native Sons CWB Chicago.
“Our goal is to address our city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. Things did not become this way overnight and change will not happen overnight.

They also ask, as part of the ordinance, that people “stop associating with and glorifying” gunmen.
“When those who live a certain lifestyle try to associate with ‘ordinary’ class citizens, they endanger everyone,” Atkins said.
No formal legislation has been drafted for the ordinance, but Hadden did promote the idea in a newsletter sent to supporters.
“We’re not waiting for a bill or law to enforce what we think should happen — this is a movement driven by social media and the media,” Atkins said.
Atkins hopes for more public support from politicians, but ultimately envisions a perfect world where no one fires a gun.
“Not everyone is willing to drop their beef,” she said. “If you are not mentally and emotionally equipped to resolve disputes in a healthy way, if you cannot help but harm each other – do so in a capacity where children, the elderly and those not involved in risky activities become less likely to be affected.”
It comes weeks after Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson, who took over from previous Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot in May, continues to try to bring crime under control in the Windy City.
Chicago’s overall crime rate so far this year is up 34 percent from 2022 and 82 percent from 2021.

It comes weeks after Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson, who took over from previous Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot in May, continues to try to bring crime under control in the Windy City.
Total crimes in Chicago are up 34 percent year-to-date from 2022 and 82 percent from 2021 year-to-date
By this time in 2022, a total of 35,186 crimes have been committed in Chicago, but by 2023, that number will be a whopping 47,141, according to the city’s own statistics.
While murders are down six percent, robberies are up 20 percent and motor vehicle thefts are up 107 percent.
Johnson recently argued with a reporter who used the phrase “mob action” to describe a mob of up to 400 teenagers who vandalized a 7-Eleven.
A huge mob stormed the convenience store in the South Loop just after 9 p.m. Sunday, wreaking havoc with some items looting and others destroying it.
The large gathering resulted in the arrest of at least 40 people, aged 12 to 20, as police attempted to bring the situation under control.
