Cheryl wipes away tears on last day in play 2.22: A Ghost Story

Cheryl burst into tears as she nearly finished her run on West End show 2.22: A Ghost Story on Sunday.

The former Girls Aloud singer, 39, sobbed as she received huge applause from the audience at London’s Lyric Theater after her penultimate performance on her final day in the production.

Pop star Cheryl has been starring as Jenny since January this year alongside former EastEnders actor Jake Wood, 50, who played the role of Ben.

Former X Factor judge Cheryl was seen wiping away tears before returning to bowing and waving.

Once almost out of sight in the wings, her co-stars offered her some reassuring words, before returning to the stage again to take a final bow as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Cheryl, who rose to fame in 2002’s Popstars: The Rivals, received rave reviews from critics for her turn in 2.22: A Ghost Story.

She was also greeted by hordes of fans at the stage door upon arrival and departure from the theatre.

The play follows Jenny who believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam remains skeptical.

They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben and decide to stay awake until 2:22 am to discover the truth.

Despite appearing in the haunted play, Cheryl herself was recently shocked when she arrived at the Lyric Theater for a performance.

She jumped up as she walked to the stage door after a fan flashed her camera last month.

Taking to Twitter, user Cheryldreamsx shared the moment when Cheryl looked stunned.

They wrote: ‘Cry. Didn’t know my flash came on! Sorry Cheryl’, before adding: ‘the flash came on, she jumped a mile… I was like “are you okay? Did you see a ghost?”.

Fellow fans of the Girls Aloud star said they replayed the video because it was so funny.

One wrote, “I keep seeing this so cute,” while another added, “poor girl’s whole life flashed before her eyes.”

A third follower chimed in: ‘Hahaha crying at this the real shock on her face lol’.

Cheryl wrapped in a black jacket and gray trousers as she was escorted out of the West End venue.

She was flanked by a security guard after a reportedly terrifying stalker ordeal in which “disgusting” notes were left for her at the theater.

The Call My Name singer wore her dark brown waves loosely over her shoulders, while a dewy makeup palette made her flawless complexion glow.

She completed her look with black shoes and kept her warm with a matching scarf.

Cheryl waved goodbye to her adoring fans as she climbed into a car that had been waiting at the stage door.

Jaime Winstone will be taking over from Cheryl as Jenny in 2:22 A Ghost Story alongside Sophia Bush, it was revealed earlier this month.

The West End thriller relies heavily on what’s known as stunt casting – where a celebrity, often with little or no acting experience, is given a role to sell tickets.

A range of big celebrity names have taken the stage in the rotating cast, including Cheryl, Lily Allen, Laura Whitmore and Tom Felton.

Now actress Jaime, 37, has become the latest star to star in the thriller play as she will take on the role of Cheryl’s Jenny at the Apollo Theater in May.

One Tree Hill actress Sophia, 40, joins Jaime on stage as she takes on the role of Lauren in the hugely popular West End show.

Game of Thrones star Ricky Champ plays Ben in the play, while theater star Clifford Samuel will also be cast.
