Chelsea star Sam Kerr has been given the honor of leading the Australian delegation at King Charles III’s coronation on Saturday.

The Blues striker was chosen as the flag bearer for Australia by the Prime Minister of her country, Anthony Albanese.

As part of her role, Kerr is part of a number of delegations that precede the monarch at Westminster Abbey, representing various Commonwealth countries and religious groups.

As a result, the attacker plays a key role in representing her country on the global stage, accompanied by Albanians, Governor General David Hurley, the Earl of Loudoun and state governors.

Kerr spoke of her pride in receiving the nomination, but admitted it was “in the back of my mind” as Chelsea was still fighting to stay in contention for a WSL title.

“It’s going to be huge and obviously it’s a great honor,” Kerr said.

“We’ve played so many big games lately it’s kind of stuck in the back of my mind and I didn’t have a chance to really think about it until it came up so I’m a little nervous.

“I found out through a phone call that I got the part, but I wasn’t sure I could do it because we have a game on Sunday, but Emma has been kind enough to let me miss a practice for it. very nice of her.’

The Australian contingent will, in fact, be the first to enter Westminster Abbey on what will undoubtedly be a historic day in London.

That contingent also includes comedian Adam Hills and artist Jasmine Coe, as well as nurse Emily Regan and musician Nick Cave.

Albanian also spoke of his pride in being part of a “remarkable” group of his compatriots who attended the event.

“I am honored to represent Australia at the coronation of the King and Queen Consort, which is a historic occasion,” Albanese said. “I am proud to join a group of remarkable Australians who will also attend the coronation and showcase our truly diverse and dynamic nation.”

In addition to her glittering run of silverware won with Emma Hayes’ Blues, the Matildas captain was also named Young Australian of the Year in 2022, as well as being awarded an Order of Australia medal for services to football.
