Chelsea should have signed ‘bargain’ Sofyan Amrabat instead of £115m Moises Caicedo, claims Blues legend, who says Moroccan midfielder would have been ‘perfect’ at Stamford Bridge

  • Former Chelsea legend has questioned the club’s decision to sign Moises Caicedo
  • The Blues secured a club record £115 million to sign the midfielder from Brighton
  • The player claims Chelsea would be better off signing Sofyan Amrabat

A former Chelsea legend has questioned the club’s decision to sign Moises Caicedo when they could have bought the ‘more experienced’ Sofyan Amrabat for a cheap price instead.

The Blues earned a record £115million signing Caicedo to Stamford Bridge last month, helping Liverpool secure the Ecuadorian’s signature.

However, Chelsea fans were far from impressed with the 21-year-old’s first appearances for the club, with the defensive midfielder at fault for Nottingham Forest’s goal in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to the Blues.

Now a former Chelsea star has commented on the club’s decision to bring in Caicedo, pointing out a player who would have been more suitable.

Frank Leboeuf, who spent six seasons in West London from 1996 to 2001, claims the Blues should have signed Sofyan Amrabat rather than break the wallet to sign Caicedo.

Speak with ESPN‘ When I see players like that going to Manchester, I often talk about Chelsea trying to find those experienced players in the middle of the park. Why didn’t you think of that man?

“He would have been the perfect player to combine with Enzo Fernandez. Yes, they have Moises Caicedo, but for over £100 million! I see that man being loaned out to United, he can then be bought for (in total) £30 million. That would have been a bargain.

“He was great for Morocco at the last World Cup. He has proven his talent. Why isn’t Chelsea thinking about these guys? He is an experienced player. Why doesn’t Chelsea think about these kinds of players?’

Manchester United have been linked to Moroccan midfielder Amrabat all summer and eventually managed to sign the 27-year-old on deadline day.

Leboeuf played for Chelsea between 1996 and 2001 and won the World Cup with France

He is on a season-long loan from Fiorentina, costing United £8 million, with the option to buy for £21 million next summer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, has focused on recruiting younger players, spending a further £400 million on new talent this summer, including Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia and the record amount spent on Caicedo.

Their summer spending has seen Todd Boehly break the £1 billion mark in just three transfer windows since taking over the club last year.
