- Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Ugochukwu will be loaned out upon his arrival
- Chelsea also still want to sign a more experienced central midfielder
Mauricio Pochettino has indicated that incoming midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu has been bought with a view to an initial loan spell.
Chelsea reached an agreement with Rennes over the France under-19 international, who has passed his medical and will sign a long-term contract.
Chelsea are short on central midfield players, but Pochettino is keen to bring in a more experienced option in that area, with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo a priority target.
Following Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fulham that saw them crowned winners of the inaugural, pre-season Premier League Summer Series trophy, head coach Pochettino said: “I don’t know the information you have.
Chelsea are in talks to sign Lesley Ugochukwu from Rennes and plan to loan him out immediately
The 19-year-old midfielder is one for the future and was on the 2023 Golden Boy Index
“My information is that it is a player who comes from France and they may have signed with the idea of loaning him to another club, but that information was already on your laptop.” There’s nothing too much to say.’
In another period of busy Chelsea transfer activity, they also agreed a £39 million deal with Monaco on Sunday for central defender Axel Disasi, who acted quickly to sign him, while Premier League rivals Manchester United and Newcastle continued to deliberate over whether not strengthen their interest.
Pochettino said, ‘You have more news than I! (Wesley) Fofana is injured, obviously we may need to strengthen this area. It’s clear, no.’
