Chelsea have announced the signing of relatively unknown Portuguese talent Renato Veiga for £12million on a seven-year deal with the club, with an option for a further 12 months.

The Blues have been criticised for their targeted recruitment of young players, betting on potential, but there are no signs they will change that approach under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Veiga has completed his move from Swiss club Basel, where he impressed during his only season at the club after joining from Sporting Lisbon.

The 20-year-old spent the majority of his youth career in Sporting’s youth system, before later being loaned to Bundesliga club Augsburg and subsequently sold to Basel.

Chelsea considered signing the inexperienced talent after Veiga had a successful season making 26 appearances in all competitions for Basel, scoring twice.

Veiga can also play as a left back and midfielder. He was signed by Basel last summer as a replacement for Riccardo Calafiori, the Italian international, who they sold to Bologna.

He will now join the club’s first team for the upcoming pre-season tour of the United States, with no word yet on whether he will get a chance in the Premier League next season.

The midfielder is the son of former Cape Verde international Nelson Veiga and has made huge strides through senior football since making his debut in Portugal’s Serie B five years ago.

Veiga is delighted to have completed his move to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea look to bounce back from another difficult season that saw Mauricio Pochettino sacked by mutual consent.

Veiga said the following about his move on the club’s official website: ‘I am extremely happy to be here.

‘This is one of the biggest clubs in England – the biggest for me – and I’m just really excited to get started.’
