Chelsea have launched an investigation into Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Mail Sport understands that discussions have taken place between the clubs and that the Blues have indicated their interest in signing the Sweden international.

They know any deal would require a club record fee above the £115m they paid for Moises Caicedo.

Isak scored 25 goals last season and is one of the most popular players in Europe. His market value is at least double the £63 million Newcastle paid Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022.

In his two seasons at St James’ Park, Isak scored 35 goals and although his first season was affected by injury, he emerged as one of the most feared strikers in the Premier League last term.

Eddie Howe wants to keep stars like Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, but the club has previously officially admitted that every player has a price in a world of profit and sustainability rules.

Although there is talk of an agreement with Isak on a new contract at Newcastle, we understand that this is not yet the case.

Chelsea have made calls for a number of attackers this summer in their search for a goalscorer who can take them to the next level.

They will complete a £5m deal for Barcelona’s 18-year-old striker Marc Guiu, but they also want a proven finisher for Enzo Maresca.

They have spoken to Lille about Canadian international Jonathan David, to Aston Villa about Jhon Duran and to Hoffenheim about Maximilian Beier, while Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin was further down their list. Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Omorodion also had a £27m bid rejected.

Chelsea also still want a winger after missing out on Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, who joins Bayern Munich.
