Chelsea forward Timo Werner is on the verge of a permanent return to RB Leipzig.

The two clubs are in advanced talks and close to reaching an agreement on a deal that will see Werner head back to his former club.

Werner joined Chelsea for £47.5m in 2020 and has scored 23 goals and set up a further 21 in 89 appearances.

RB Leipzig are reportedly close to re-signing Timo Werner from Chelsea on a loan-to-buy deal

However, regular football has not been forthcoming for Werner at Stamford Bridge, particularly last season under Thomas Tuchel.

He was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their season-opening 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

After seeing his involvement drop significantly last season, Werner expressed his desire to play more often during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America, particularly ahead of the World Cup in November.

While it was expected that a loan move would be sanctioned, Werner is instead set to seal a permanent move allowing Chelsea to recoup some of their outlay two years ago and amid their own spree this summer.

The German forward scored 34 goals in his final season at Leipzig before Chelsea signed him

They have spent around £175m already on Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Gabriel Slonina and Marc Cucurella.

And with Leicester’s Wesley Fofana, Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and a striker also on their wish list that figure would pass £300m before sales if they land their targets.

Barcelona’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been offered to Chelsea who are also battling Manchester United, among others, for RB Salzburg striker starlet Benjamin Sesko.

Raheem Sterling’s arrival at the Blues could see Werner’s opportunities decrease even further

Werner’s future has been up in the air since the end of last season, while the £50million arrival of Raheem Sterling raised further questions about his playing opportunities.

Werner is currently recovering from an injury and played no part in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

But speaking on the Blues’ pre-season tour of the United States, he hinted that his future may lie away from London.

‘It is clear I want to play more and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup and also, to have a chance to play at the World Cup,’ Werner said.

The 26-year-old is currently recovering from injury and did not play on the opening day

‘I think it doesn’t change anything whether it is a winter world cup or in the summer. I think if I play half or the season or the whole season, I should play.

‘The most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals. That’s the fact. That’s what I should take care of and the other things will come.’

When quizzed over whether could find that happiness at Chelsea he responded sharply: ‘I could be happy everywhere.’
