Chelsea ‘could offer Kepa Arrizabalaga as part of a deal to sign Inter Milan’s Andre Onana’

Chelsea could offer big money flop Kepa Arrizabalaga as part of a deal to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan, while Italian giants slap £35million on the Cameroon international to discourage interest from the Blues circle.

  • Kepa Arrizabalaga arrived at Chelsea in 2018 for a world record £72 million
  • Andre Onana has kept 15 clean sheets in 33 appearances for Inter Milan this season
  • Chelsea ‘set its sights on Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel to replace Arrizabalaga’

Chelsea are ready to offer Kepa Arrizabalaga as part of a deal to bring Andre Onana from Inter Milan to west London, reports say.

Arrizabalaga’s stay at Chelsea has been turbulent so far, but after a long spell out of the first team he has been favored more often than Edouard Mendy between the sticks.

However, with Onana impressing in Serie A and helping Inter to the semi-finals of the Champions League, his stay at the club could end with a summer departure.

Both Arrizabalaga and Mendy are deemed to be below the required level, with Chelsea having already named Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel as another possible option to replace both goalkeepers.

And according Gazzetta dello Sportthrough Football Italythe Spaniard could be involved in negotiations between the two clubs, with The Blues keen to replace him with the Cameroon international goalkeeper.

The report claims the Premier League team is prepared to discuss the future of the 27-year-old Inter star at a meeting later this week, with Arrizabalaga considered a possible negotiating option for the Blues.

Inter are believed to have put a £35.4 million (€40 million) price tag on their stopper, and although Chelsea have spent lavishly over the past two windows, they will be happy to trade a player to lower the transfer fee.

Onana is one of the most outstanding performers in an up and down season for the Nerazzurri.

Despite struggling in the league – with just one win since March 5 – they are in the last four of both the Coppa Italia and Champions League, having already won the Supercoppa Italiana in January.

But the 27-year-old has offered a reliable option at the back after only joining on a free transfer from Dutch giants Ajax last summer, where he played for seven years.

In 33 appearances in all competitions, he kept 15 clean sheets, including in the Supercoppa Italiana final, the first leg against Benfica, both games with Porto, a win in the Milan derby and a 1-0 victory over the runaway champions -elect Napoli.

Arrizabalaga’s season has been a little less consistent, although he played for a Chelsea side in the 2022-23 season that suffered the same fate, keeping just nine clean sheets in the Premier League.

However, a departure as part of a deal to facilitate the arrival of his replacement would be seen as a limp departure for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

The Spaniard joined West London from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 on a £72 million (€80 million) deal, but has left that price tag well behind him.

He has kept a total of 59 clean sheets in 157 appearances for Chelsea, and although he was part of the sides that won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, he was replaced by Mendy upon his arrival in 2020.

The Spaniard is out of contract in 2025 and so The Blues will be keen to see him leave for a decent fee – or even as part of a major move to bolster their options – rather than lose him for nothing after next summer.

Inter are reportedly eyeing a possible move for Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario if they lose Onana, with the Italian impressing with seven clean sheets in Serie A this season.
