Mauricio Pochettino has had a successful start as Chelsea’s new boss.

After being confirmed as the club’s new permanent manager at the end of May, the Argentine has been working to get the London team in top form for the new Premier League season and his hard work looks set to pay off.

On Sunday, he tasted his first success as the new Blues boss, as Chelsea beat Fulham 2-0 to win the Premier League Summer Series in the US.

It was a comfortable victory for the Blues, with Thiago Silva and Christopher Nkunku both scoring in the first half, helping Pochettino’s side remain unbeaten in the United States and finish top of the pre-season table, two points clear of Aston Villa.

And their fine form has already got Chelsea fans excited for the start of the season, with some taking to social media to express their delight at their new manager’s work.

One called it a ‘good start to the season’ and Pochettino notably echoed that sentiment praising two of its key players, Enzo Fernandez and rising young star Iaan Maatsen.

“It’s always a pleasure to have Fernandez,” said the 51-year-old manager after the game.

“He’s very humble, he’s also a fighter and a fantastic player, world champion with Argentina and I’m so proud.

I am also Argentinian and I shared the happiness when they won the World Cup. It’s nice to have such a player in the selection.’

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Maatsen has impressed for the club on their pre-season tour of the US.

The promising left-back, who joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in 2018, has spent time learning his trade in Chelsea’s youth system, while also spending time on loan at Charlton Coventry and Burnley.

He particularly impressed in their 5-0 win against Wrexham and has attracted interest from other clubs including West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Speaking about the Dutch defender’s future, Pochettino admitted he has the potential to play in a more advanced position on the left wing.

“He has the capacity to compete for different places on the pitch,” the Chelsea manager said of Maatsen.

“He’s a player you can use in different positions. I’m so happy because his performance hasn’t changed.

“We are very happy with that because he is a player we see with huge potential for the team.”

Pochettino also admitted to being delighted with the win, but claimed his attention was now on the new Premier League season.

“It’s always good to win, I’m so happy again with the performance and the work of the players from the start,” said Pochettino. “It’s a busy time but I think we’re doing well, the players and the staff.

“It’s been four busy games in a very short time and now we’re playing Dortmund in Chicago and we have to keep going.

“We will continue and prepare the team to arrive in the best condition for the Premier League.”
