Fernández has been the subject of intense negotiations between current club Benfica and the Premier League side in the January transfer window.

But, Blues owner Todd Boehly will see his club finally achieve one of its main goals after bidding £10m for the star’s release clause, according to The times.

There was always the possibility that Chelsea would return to try to negotiate a January move for the star given Fernández’s public attempts to leave the Portuguese club.

Fernandez’s record transfer would eclipse Chelsea’s own record £97.5m they paid Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku and, furthermore, the record £100m Man City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021.

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have been the biggest spender in the Premier League as they bolstered their squad this month with several signings including David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto.
