- Clubs are making plenty of deals on football’s ‘unofficial deadline’
- They do everything they can to ensure they stay on the right side of the PSR rules
We may be halfway through Euro 2024, but there is plenty to do outside of Germany, especially when it comes to transfer deals.
June 30 marks the end of the financial year for top clubs and that means they need their accounts to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules.
Everton and Nottingham Forest were both accused of breaching these rules last season, resulting in eight and four points deductions for the clubs respectively.
With this in mind, teams are having to get creative with their business to ensure the numbers add up, which is why we are seeing a number of high profile deals being struck on what can now be considered the Premier League’s ‘unofficial deadline day’.
Not for the first time in the past two years since Todd Boehly took over the club, Chelsea are at the center of the transfer market.

The Blues have agreed a £30million deal with Leicester for Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, reuniting the midfielder with his former manager Enzo Maresca.
Leicester are reportedly keen on Chelsea’s 18-year-old midfielder Michael Golding as a potential replacement for Dewsbury-Hall.
Chelsea sold young defender Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa earlier this week for £37.5million and they have wasted no time in spending their money on homegrown talent.
Teenager Omari Kellyman went in the opposite direction in a separate deal on Saturday, with clubs willing to sell their homegrown talent for pure profit, and he could soon be joined at Stamford Bridge by Dewsbury-Hall.
Villa are in business with Chelsea and are also negotiating with other clubs to keep their finances under control despite securing a place in next season’s Champions League.
It always seemed likely that they would have to sell one of their key players this summer to stay on PSR’s good side, and Douglas Luiz has now completed his £42million switch to Italian giants Juventus.
A fee in that region will also likely be needed to sign versatile youngster Archie Gray from Leeds United, and Tottenham could be in pole position to land his signature.
Leeds are forced to sell players after failing to gain promotion back to the Premier League. Gray is a player in high demand.
He looked set to join Brentford as the west London club took a lead over their rivals on Saturday, but Leeds rejected a bid from the Bees.
Tottenham are now eyeing a £40m deal as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his squad after their collapse in the final weeks of last season.
They still have to strike a deal with Leeds but may be in a strong negotiating position as Leeds do not want to miss Sunday’s deadline and risk being punished.
Meanwhile, there couldn’t have been a busier few weeks at Newcastle, as the club desperately tries to comply with PSR rules.
As they entered the final week before the deadline they knew they had to raise money, and Mail Sport exclusively revealed they were prepared to sell Anthony Gordon to Liverpool.
However, earlier this week talks broke down after Newcastle wanted to include Jarell Quansah in the deal.
Chelsea have also shown an interest in Alexander Isak, but with the Magpies keen to keep their star striker, they have decided to offload two of their other players.
They agreed a £33million transfer fee with Brighton on Saturday for Yankuba Minteh following his impressive loan spell at Feyenoord last season, and he looks set to move to the Amex Stadium after failing to make a single appearance for Newcastle.
Homegrown star Elliot Anderson also looks likely to move to Nottingham Forest for £35million. A medical has been booked for the midfielder ahead of his proposed move to the east Midlands, while Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos could join Newcastle in a separate deal.
