Preston striker Ched Evans faces ‘life-changing consequences’ as he leaves football for surgery on a mysterious ‘serious medical condition’ caused by ‘repeated forceful contact’
- Ched Evans will be unavailable for an extended period of time as he is undergoing surgery
- Preston said the surgery will address his symptoms and prevent further damage
- Manager Ryan Lowe said the club will continue to support Evans and his family
Preston North End has announced that Ched Evans will be unavailable for an extended period of time, with the forward-looking potentially life-changing consequences of developing a serious drug.
The Championship club said Evans’ condition is a result of “repeated intensive contact he has received on a weekly basis throughout his career”.
Preston did not disclose Evans’ condition but said it is “more common in American football and rugby players.”
“The condition requires surgery to address its current symptoms and prevent further damage in the future,” Preston said.
Over the course of the past week, the club has consulted with the country’s leading specialists and they are currently working together to finalize the operation.

Pending a successful operation, the striker – who has scored nine goals this season – will rehabilitate for a longer period of time.
“Specific timetables for a possible return will not be announced until the outcome of the operation is known, but all parties remain hopeful that Ched will play and score goals in a PNE shirt in the future.”
Evans last played for Preston on 14 March against Rotherham with the striker scoring in a 2–1 win.
The attacker was substituted during the game with an injury.
Preston manager Ryan Lowe said the club will continue to offer their support to Evans and his family.

“We will be there for him every day, whatever he needs, we will be there for him and the family,” Lowe said.
“It’s been tough for me, the staff and the players because it’s a bit sickening when you get that news in the blink of an eye.
“He has a strong family behind him who will make sure he is right. Once he has surgery, hopefully we’ll see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, because having surgery doesn’t mean he’s done.
“He will have to decide what he wants to do with his future and whatever he chooses, we will be behind it 100%.”
