Cheap Kmart skincare leaves daughter with facial burns – as mother issues urgent warning
A concerned mother has urged parents to take a closer look at their child’s skincare after her daughter suffered burns.
Melbourne mother claims her daughter bought niacinamide serum, grapefruit facial scrub and biodegradable mask from a Kmart in Frankston, southeast of the city, the week before the school holidays started .
The excited 11-year-old had bought the products with her pocket money for a sleepover with her friend.
Her mother, a cosmetic nurse, examined the ingredients before the girls used them and deemed them safe to use.
However, just a few days after using the treatment, the girl’s face “tingled” every time she sweated.
An 11-year-old girl suffered burns and peeling of her skin (above) after using three Kmart skin products.
‘I“It got really bad after a week, the dryness started and then the following days it got worse,” the mother told Sun Herald Wednesday.
The reaction was so bad she feared her daughter had used strong products from her salon, but the 11-year-old insisted she only used Kmart skincare.
Fortunately, the girl’s burns were treated with a “gentle serum” and she was left with peeling skin.
The mum warned parents to be wary of ‘cheap’ skin products their children are using.
“Kids are going through this stage right now… (where they) want to buy skincare and do these things together,” she said.
“I just never thought there would be anything active enough to cause such a problem.”
A Kmart spokesperson told the Herald Sun that the product label advises customers to test their skincare products before using them.
The girl said she used a niacinamide serum, a grapefruit facial scrub (above) and a biodegradable mask from a Kmart.
“At Kmart, we take the quality and safety of all our products very seriously. Although these products meet all required standards, we investigate any incidents reported to us,” they said.
