Charlie Puth claims that “a collective” of people at the Ellen DeGeneres record label “just disappeared” on him after his first album with them.
Ellen’s label has come under fire after singer Greyson Chance said the ‘manipulative’ presenter launched his career and then unceremoniously ‘abandoned’ him.
In a new interview with rolling stoneAddressing the allegations, Charlie, 30, said: “We both have different experiences, me versus Greyson. But I do agree with him that after making my first demo EP there was certainly no one there.’
Charlie Puth claims ‘a collective’ of people at Ellen DeGeneres record label ‘just disappeared’ from him after his first album with them
Charlie became a singing sensation on YouTube, especially after he and a singer named Emily Luther covered the Adele hit Something Like You in 2011.
Ellen picked up Charlie and Emily and signed to her label 11 that year.
By 2012, Charlie had left Ellen’s label, however, and in his new interview, he clarified that he was “blaming not one person, but a collective.”
Charlie claimed that after he made the demo EP, “All the people that were in that room just disappeared. I haven’t heard from anyone.’
As they were: Charlie is pictured during one of his appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ended this year
Three years later, he landed with Atlantic Records, where he has remained ever since, releasing his last album with them this week.
During his new interview, he also addressed rumors of Ellen’s behavior, saying, “People describe Ellen as being rude. I’ve never experienced that. Maybe she likes me.’
The Ellen DeGeneres Show ran for 19 seasons and was plagued by accusations that the host was in charge of a “toxic” work environment.
Ellen dismissed the claims as a “coordinated, misogynistic” attack, insisting she “possibly” could not have known her staff were unhappy.
Greyson and Ellen: Ellen’s label is under fire after singer Greyson Chance said the ‘manipulative’ presenter launched his career and then ‘left’ him
Greyson was discovered by Ellen in 2010, when he was 12 years old, after he made a viral video about the Lady Gaga song Paparazzi.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, he accuses her of being ‘manipulative’, ‘selfish’, ‘opportunistic’ and ‘way too controlling’.
He further accused Ellen of having “completely abandoned him” after his second album Truth Be Told, Part 1 flopped in 2012.
With the failure of Truth Be Told, Part 1, he was dropped by both Interscope and the representation that Ellen had helped secure him.
Throwback: Charlie and Emily Luther were brought to Ellen’s show over a decade ago to perform their cover of the Adele hit Something Like You
Greyson claimed that Ellen stopped calling back at that point. “I couldn’t get a hold of her,” he said. “I couldn’t talk to her.”
He continued to appear on her daytime series until 2019, but said, “If I got on the show, it was such a fake smile.”
An insider close to Ellen’s team shot back inside Entertainment tonight: “Ellen and the team did their best and sometimes careers just didn’t take off.”
According to the source: ‘Chance didn’t complain at the time and continued to appear on the show to launch his new projects. He took this time to release an album to go after Ellen with opportunistic claims.”
