Mel recently revealed she was at the center of a bizarre incident involving a cricket umpire that forced play to be postponed during the 2023 Boxing Day Test.
The sports presenter was catching a lift from the MCG’s underground car park with third referee Richard Illingworth when the lift malfunctioned, trapping her and eight other people and forcing her to use her phone to call for help.

Play in the post-lunch session was held up as a result of the scare, with McLaughlin describing what happened in the lift as she subsequently joined her co-commentators Justin Langer and James Brayshaw.
“We (she and Illingworth) were chatting a bit… and the doors opened and closed and then stopped moving,” she said.
“He stood in the corner and said, ‘Do you have a phone?’ Can you please call someone and let them know I’m in the elevator and I’ll be a little late?’

“So yeah, everyone went to work and ten minutes later we were released, I don’t know. Sorry everyone!’
The game had to be postponed because the third referee – although he does not take a position on the pitch – sits in a broadcast booth and is responsible for making the final decision on dismissals referred to them by the two referees on the ground.
They can also serve as an on-field referee in case of injury or illness.
