Channel Nine raises eyebrows after airing an Australian Open promo featuring a song by disgraced pop pedophile Gary Glitter, just weeks before his release from prison.

Channel Nine have featured a controversial song choice in a new ad for the 2023 Australian Open.

On Tuesday morning, the network aired a promo starring tennis ace Novak Djokovic, backed by disgraced pedophile Gary Glitter’s Rock N Roll Pt 2.

The ad opens with a shot of a beaming Djokovic playfully wiggling his butt as he prepares to return a serve.

Djokovic begins to dance, before suddenly transforming into DC Universe villain The Joker, a reference to the Serbian star’s nickname ‘Djoker’.

Rock N Roll Pt 2, which also played during the iconic staircase scene in Todd Phillips’ movie Joker, plays in the background.

British glam-rock singer Glitter, born Paul Francis Gadd, was jailed in 2015 for abusing three girls and is reportedly due to be released in a matter of weeks.

The 1972 hit Rock N Roll Pt 2 is considered a sports anthem and is often played at live events despite Glitter’s dark past.

Glitter found fame in the 1970s as part of the glam rock scene, scoring number one hits with I’m The Leader Of The Gang (I Am), I Love You Love Me Love and Always Yours.

He was first jailed in 1999 after pleading guilty to 54 counts of taking indecent photographs of children under the age of 16.

The singer fell from grace two years earlier when a computer technician discovered thousands of images of child pornography on his laptop while repairing it.

Glitter was then jailed in Vietnam for two years in 2006 for sexually abusing two Vietnamese girls, ages 10 and 11.

In 2015, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for historical sex crimes against three girls between the ages of 8 and 13, at the height of his fame in the 1970s and 1980s.

He was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13, and four counts of indecent assault.

Now 78 years old, Glitter is reported to be out of prison in a “matter of weeks” after serving only half of his 16-year sentence.

Justice Ministry sources reportedly said Sun earlier this month that the “nature of his determined sentence means the case will not go to the Parole Board.”

“It just means that as soon as your sentence is over, you are free to walk out the prison gates,” the source added.

They said Glitter had “kept a clean nose in prison” so her sentence will be almost up.

License terms may include staying in an approved location, obeying a curfew and having GPS tagging, no unsupervised contact with children, and restrictions on Internet use.

Families of victims can also protect themselves from unwanted contact by creating exclusion zones.

If offenders break the conditions, the Probation Service can call them to prison.
