Champions League permutations: Who needs what to qualify for the last 16?

>

The final round of the Champions League group stage will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, with many teams still hoping to secure their progress to the knockout stages.

Twelve teams have already qualified for the round of 16, leaving only four places up for grabs.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are all through, while Tottenham face a tough game in Marseille and could still finish first, second or third.

So what are the permutations for each of the eight groups ahead of this week’s games.

Sports post dives deep into the possible outcomes.

Chelsea defeated RB Salzburg last week to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League

Liverpool have also qualified with 12 teams already sealed in the round of 16

group A

Matches (1 November): Liverpool vs Napoli and Rangers vs Ajax

Qualifying for this group is complete now that Napoli and Liverpool have already qualified.

Likewise, barring a six-goal defeat to Rangers, Ajax will finish third and enter the Europa League.

The top position is not technically final yet, although Liverpool will have to beat Napoli by four goals or more, which seems unlikely given the form of both sides.

Group B

Matches (1 November): Porto vs Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen vs Club Brugge

Just like Group A, the qualification has already been secured by the surprising toppers Club Brugge and Porto.

Only one point separates the top two and therefore the Belgian side will finish on top if they win, both games are equal or if Porto loses.

The Portuguese team will be the first if they win and Brugge don’t or if they draw and the Belgian side lose.

The Belgian Club Brugge was the surprise story of this season’s Champions League

Group C

Matches (1 November): Bayern Munich vs Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen vs Barcelona

Group C is also linked with Bayern finishing first, Inter second, Barcelona third and Plzen fourth.

The only danger in this group is whether the German champions end up with six wins out of six.

Bayern Munich have won five of their five group stage matches so far this season

Group D

Matches (1 November): Sporting Lisbon vs Eintracht Frankfurt and Marseille vs Tottenham

The most exciting group goes into the final day of play, with all four teams still able to qualify for the round of 16.

If Tottenham manage to avoid defeat in France, they will qualify for the knockout stage.

They will finish first if they win, or if both games are tied. If they lose, depending on other results, they can miss out, but they can’t finish fourth.

Antonio Conte’s side, Marseille, knowing they can still finish first, second or third

Sporting, who drew 1-1 with Tottenham last week, will qualify for the round of 16 if they avoid defeat.

They will finish in first place if they beat Frankfurt and don’t beat the Spurs Marseille.

The Portuguese side will finish third if they and Marseille lose, but they will be fourth if Marseille win and they lose.

Last season’s Europa League winners Frankfurt are through if they beat Sporting, while they could finish first if they beat Spurs in France.

Meanwhile, Marseille must beat Spurs on Tuesday night to qualify and they could still finish first if the Sporting vs Frankfurt match ends in a draw.

It is perhaps notable that the bottom two sides in the group currently have the potential to finish in the top two.

Marseille can also qualify despite being the lowest, with all teams still having a chance

Group E

Matches (November 2): Chelsea vs Dinamo Zagreb and AC Milan vs RB Salzburg

Chelsea have seeded Group E as the top contender after beating AC Milan twice.

Milan will face Salzburg in a hard-fought clash with the Italian giants currently one point ahead and so if they avoid defeat they will qualify with Graham Potter’s side.

Dinamo, meanwhile, cannot qualify despite being three points behind Milan, having lost to Stefan Pioli’s side along with Salzburg.

Group F

Matches (November 2): Real Madrid vs Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk vs RB Leipzig

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are currently one point ahead of Leipzig and will be group winners if they beat Celtic or if Leipzig don’t win.

The German side face Shakhtar in Warsaw and will qualify if they avoid defeat – while if they win and lose Los Blancos they will overtake the reigning European champions.

However, if Shakhtar manages to beat Leipzig, they will advance to the round of 16 in what would be a remarkable story.

Celtic, meanwhile, have been sentenced to fourth place and look set to go winless on their return to the Champions League group stage for the first time in five years.

Champions League holders Real Madrid may not lead the group after last week’s loss to Leipzig

Group G

Matches (November 2): Manchester City vs Sevilla and FC Copenhagen vs Borussia Dortmund

Group G has already been decided and City will finish first, ahead of Dortmund, while Sevilla will remain third and Copenhagen will finish last.

Pep Guardiola’s side will aim to remain undefeated throughout the group stage as they pursue the trophy that has so far eluded them.

Group H

Matches (November 2): Juventus vs Paris Saint Germain and Maccabi Haifi vs Benfica

PSG and Benfica have qualified from this group, while Juventus and Maccabi will finish in the bottom two, but the exact positions are yet to be determined.

The Parisians have a better goal difference than Benfica by four points, so the Portuguese side, unbeaten in all competitions this season, will have to improve PSG’s result.

Their encounters both ended 1-1, so if Benfica were to win by four goals more than PSG’s margin, the ranking would drop to away goals in group matches.

At the bottom, Juventus are currently ahead of Maccabi on goal difference, as both teams won their home games by a margin of two goals.

This means that the Italian giants only have to match the result of the Israeli side and avoid a six-goal swing so as not to be embarrassed by not even qualifying for the Europa League.
