American football fans were outraged when CBS cut coverage of Manchester City’s Champions League match against Real Madrid to bring a groundbreaking report on former President Donald Trump.

Pep Guardiola’s side traveled to Madrid on Tuesday afternoon for a vital semi-final first leg against Real Madrid in what was to be a thrilling rematch of last year’s showdown between the reigning Premier League winners and Champions League holders.

Football fans in the United States, however, were left behind after CBS, the only channel covering Europe’s biggest competition, cut its program midway through the first half of the Santiago Bernabeu game.

And football supporters across the United States were outraged when they took to social media to criticize the network for the interruption.

“CBS really just stopped the UEFA Champions League game to tell us that Trump lost a civil case????? Like brah Put the game back on wtf @CBS,” one furious viewer took to social media.

CEO and founder of @snapback_sports Jack Settleman asked, “Is there a way to get the Champions League game going again or do I have to look at this special trump report?”

Meanwhile, one Twitter user jokingly threatened, “If CBS doesn’t stop their ‘special news’ and restart the Champions League game, I’m going to vote for Trump.”

Another didn’t hesitate to vent his frustration as they ranted: “WHY IS TRUMP PAUSING THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, GET ME BACK TO WHAT’S IMPORTANT @CBSSportsSoccer.”

A similar level of anger came from another football viewer on Twitter when they posted, “YOU D***HEADS HAVE STOPPED THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TO TELL US TRUMP IS 5 MILLION DOLLARS POORER.

Another viewer shared a photo of a sports bar that had been showing the game on the televisions behind the bar, showing the special report segment splashing across the screens instead of the action.

They announced, “Champions League broadcast paused for news about Donald Trump,” before adding, “Seriously, but put the game back on.”

However, some social media users pointed out that Univision, the network that holds the Spanish-language rights to the coverage, was reportedly still showing the game and urging people to switch.

The two teams were only 13 minutes into the game when CBS’s red Special Report graphic splashed across American TV screens and the network entered the latest news segment with football completely forgotten.

The broadcaster continued to cover the news that the former president had long been held liable for assault and defamation in a civil suit brought by E. Jean Carroll.

Fans watching CBS missed 13 minutes of the game, with the broadcast stopping at about 3:15 p.m. and resuming at about 3:28 p.m.

Luckily for the viewers, they didn’t miss any crucial action and the score was still 0-0 when the footage finally came back.

CBS could perhaps breathe a sigh of relief that those desperate for the thriller between City and Real didn’t miss the game’s opening goal.
