A young boy has been seriously injured after being kicked in the head by a horse along a walkway in one of Sydney’s largest parks, in harrowing scenes.

Four ambulance crews, including a specialist medical team, rushed to the scene of the accident in Centennial Parklands shortly after 1pm on Wednesday.

Harrowing photos show a five-year-old boy lying on a stretcher surrounded by paramedics treating his head injuries.

He was intubated and taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick with a police escort.

A boy with serious head injuries had to be intubated after being kicked by a horse.

It is understood a family was walking and tending to their horse when the boy was kicked in the head.

A heavy police presence cordoned off the Centennial Parklands Loop while the boy was treated at the scene and transported from the site.

According to paramedics, the boy is in a serious but stable condition.

The police remain on site in the park where a crime scene has been set up.

NSW Police have referred questions about the incident to Ambulance NSW.

The Centennial Parklands trail is a popular spot for equestrians, where signs urge motorists to give way to horses.
