Celtic fans have been accused of leaving a landmark Madrid square that looks like a rubbish dump for their team’s 5-1 Champions League hammer.
Spaniards kicked the visiting supporters downstairs on Thursday by describing the scene they had left in the Plaza Mayor as ‘terrible’.
Fans gathered in the square in the heart of the Spanish capital ahead of Wednesday night’s game and spent the afternoon singing and snacking while drinking lager from cans they’d brought from nearby supermarkets, convenience stores and street vendors.

And while there were no reports of major public order problems, the mess left behind by the supporters seems to have left a lasting impression on their hosts.
Spanish TV reporter Alberto Catalan described the square as a pigsty in a video he posted on his Twitter.
Veteran diplomat Juan Manuel Molina said Madrid’s politicians should hang their heads for letting “drunken tourism” take over one of the city’s most emblematic monuments.
Another Spanish journalist, Juan Ignacio Barrero, added alongside images of the lager cans, plastic bags and empty glasses on the floor of the square: ‘Let’s just say that our Celtic friends did not leave the Plaza Mayor very nicely.’
Regional TV station Telemadrid accused Celtic fans of leaving a “crime scene” by leaving behind “hundreds of plastic bags, broken bottles and other “organic remains” resulting from heavy consumption of beer and other alcohol, with its unmistakable scent.’

Complaints poured in as Celtic fans returned home after their comprehensive defeat to reigning champions Real Madrid.
Celtic missed a penalty and got two towards the end of their Champions League campaign.
The goals in the second half from Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde set the game way beyond the Scottish side.
Pundit and former Real Madrid player Steve McManaman also used the word ‘garbage’ – to describe the decision to award the Spanish giants their first-half penalties for handball rather than the mess left by some of the traveling fans.
