Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White’s £145-a-night Cotswolds hotel is being criticized by guests who compare their stay to a night at ‘Fawlty Towers’

  • Marco Pierre-White’s hotel Rudloe Arms in Cotswolds has received poor reviews
  • Visitors have said it’s ‘like staying in Fawlty Towers’ and they give it a wide berth

He was once the darling of the culinary scene and the first British chef to be awarded three Michelin stars.

But after launching a new career as a boutique hotel owner, the fiery Marco Pierre-White seems to have run out of steam.

His Cotswolds hideaway, the Rudloe Arms, has been described by some guests as a ‘nightmare’ and compared to Fawlty Towers.

It has recently received a string of negative reviews on Tripadvisor, with some warnings to potential guests to ‘approach with caution’ and ‘give it a very wide berth’.

Pierre-White, 61, bought the Grade II listed Rudloe, in Corsham, near Bath, in 2012, and after extensive refurbishment, the 40-bedroom hotel has won critical acclaim.

But in recent months, guests at the original Hell’s Kitchen star hotel, where a double room costs from £145, have complained about terrible food and poor service.

A recent visitor described it as ‘like staying in Fawlty Towers’.

Another said: ‘I can only advise everyone to avoid this “hotel” like the plague!!

“Marco Pierre White, I’m not sure you know what’s going on in your name, but if you do, hang your head in shame. If you don’t, maybe you should.’

Another review last month read: ‘I was skeptical about this hotel after reading the bad reviews and I was right.

“Our experience is terrible. Terrible experience, terrible hotel.’

Another said, “What a load of PENS. Would we come back again? 100% NO. (Unless there was an apocalypse and the showers were still running.)’

However, some guests were satisfied, one giving it a ‘very good rating’ for the ‘perfect food and incredible, caring staff where nothing is too much trouble’.

The hotel’s website says it prides itself on offering a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff.

It says about Rudloe’s restaurant: ‘Perfect food and incredible, caring staff where “nothing is too much trouble” is what makes this truly unique English boutique country house No. 1 in the area.’

Pierre-White became the first British chef to win three Michelin stars when he was 33. He was mentored by Albert and Michel Roux in Mayfair and later teamed up with Gordon Ramsay – until the pair fell out.
